I don't know what traditionally the UK leaves for Santa, but every Christmas, my brothers and I religiously set out a plate of cookies on the front porch for him to eat, as well as carrots and lettuce for his reindeers. The fact that they were no longer on the porch when we arose the next morning, absolutely convinced us that he was a) very real, and b) left us gifts, as we had made a token effort at being manageable for Mom and Dad.
